Lecture notes in Latin written in black ink with marginal additions in red ink, bound in 2 v. The course begins with an overview of chemistry, with 6 large, fully hand-colored ill. of chemical apparatus and ca. 30 smaller ill., mostly in grey water-color. Included are 2 tables with chemical symbols, one of which is folded. The next section details 35 chemical procedures. Vol. 2 deals with the chemistry of the animal kingdom and then with that of the mineral kingdom.

Jacquin was the first German writer to employ the binary system extensively and described many new species. He held the chair of chemistry and botany in the medical faculty of the University of Vienna from 1768-1796. He was made a noble in 1774 and a baron in 1806. He was an important exponent of Joseph Black and of Linnaeus. In 1783 he published his lectures as Anfangsgründe der medicinisch-practischen Chymie zum Gebrauch seiner Vorlesungen.
